TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Savannah State women's basketball team traded the lead 10 times against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rival Florida A&M Saturday afternoon in Tallahassee, Florida, but the Lady Rattlers, behind a late period run, sealed up a 67-59 victory.
SSU was led by
Andrietta Thomas and
Blessing Uba who each scored 14. Thomas was 5-for-15 from the floor and 3-for-10 from the 3-point line. Uba came off the bench to sink 6-of-12 attempts from the floor.
Senior
Erin Hogue and sophomore
Jasmine Norman added 12 points each. Hogue led the Lady Tigers in rebounds with nine. Norman was 4-for-9 from the field with one 3-pointer.
FAMU's Jasmine Grice opened the scoring in the first period with a good jump shot. Grice led the field with 24 points. She hit 10-of-28 field goal attempts and led the field in steals with five.
Thomas responded with a 3-pointer for SSU's first lead, 4-3, in the opening minutes. With 16:13 to play in the first half, FAMU's Kimberly Sparkman drained a 3-pointer to give the home team a 12-6 lead.
Uba gave the Lady Tigers the lead back with a 3-pointer a few minutes later. The Lady Rattlers then jumped out to a seven point lead, 24-17, with 10:06 to play. The teams traded blows over the waning minutes of the opening period.
With 2:14 to play, Uba tied the game at 32 with a layup. Hogue pushed SSU out to a 34-32 lead with a short jumper and 1:33 on the clock. A costly turnover in the last seconds led to a layup from Sparkman to tie the game at 34 into the locker room.
The Lady Tigers shot 51.9 percent from the floor in the opening period. They were 4-for-8 from beyond the arc in the opening half. FAMU shot 32.5 percent from the floor and 40 percent from the 3-point line.
The Lady Rattlers opened the second period with 6-2 run for a 40-36 lead with 16:08 to play. Uba knotted the game up at 40 a minute later with a block and a layup on a fast break.
Hogue again tied the game with two good free-throws at the 14:31 mark. Uba drained a 3-pointer, and Hogue added a layup to give the Lady Tigers their largest lead of the game, 47-42 with 12:11 to play.
Florida A&M responded with a 15-0 run in the subsequent five minutes to take a 57-47 lead with 7:54 to play. Norman broke the SSU scoring drought with two good free-throws at the 7:42 mark.
With two minutes to play, Norman scored six straight points and capped off a 7-0 SSU run with a layup to get the Lady Tigers within four points, 63-59, of FAMU's lead.
FAMU held SSU scoreless in the final minutes as they tacked on four more points for the final score. The Lady Rattlers shot at a 34.2 percent clip from the floor and 40 percent from the 3-point line.
SSU managed a 43.4 percent clip from the floor, 35.7 percent from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent from the charity strip. The Lady Tigers outrebounded FAMU 43-40, but committed 21 costly turnovers.
The Lady Tigers fall to 7-18 overall and 2-10 in the MEAC, while FAMU improves to 10-15 and 7-5 in conference play.
Savannah State returns to the hardwood on Monday with a visit to Daytona Beach, Florida and the Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
