SAVANNAH, Ga. – Despite three players in double-digits, the Savannah State women's basketball team fell to North Carolina A&T, 45-67, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game, Monday evening in Tiger Arena.
North Carolina A&T's Amber Calvin led the field with 24 points.
Jasmine Norman led the Lady Tigers with 13 points. Senior
Erin Hogue scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while
Andrietta Thomas posted 11 points for SSU.
The Lady Aggies jumped out to a quick lead with a 9-0 run in the opening two minutes of the game. Thomas put the Lady Tigers on the board with a 3-pointer at the 17:48 mark of the first period.
A&T proceeded out to an 11-point lead two minutes later on a 5-0 run. The Lady Aggies pushed out to their largest lead of the half, 17-5, behind a 3-pointer from Calvin with 15:17 on the clock.
Savannah State answered with a 9-2 run sparked by a 3-pointer from Norman, and capped by a jump shot from Hogue. The Lady Tigers shot 50 percent from beyond the arc in the opening period. Both teams shot 100 percent from the free-throw line, hitting a combined 11 attempts.
With 6:27 to play, Tracy King hit a jumper to give the Lady Aggies a 31-20 lead. Thomas drained a short jump shot with 4:59 in the first half to cut A&T's lead to 31-24.
Both teams went scoreless in the subsequent two minutes. Calvin sank two free-throws with 2:10 to play for the final points of the half. The Lady Aggies went into the locker room up 33-24.
King drained a 3-pointer in the opening minutes of the second half to give the Lady Aggies a 36-24 lead. SSU cut that lead to eight points a couple of minutes later behind back-to-back 3-pointers from Thomas.
Thomas hit 3-of-6 attempts from beyond the arc, and went 4-for-9 from the field.
With 14:38 to play, SSU went on a 6-0 run to cut the Lady Aggies lead to four points, 38-42. It was the closest the Lady Tigers got to A&T's lead.
A&T responded with a 12-1 run in the following four and a half minutes, to take a 54-39 lead with 9:16 to play.
The Lady Tigers were unable to erase the Lady Aggies double-digit lead in the final minutes of the game. NCAT pushed out to their largest lead of the game, 67-43, with 1:36 to play behind a layup from JaQuayla Berry.
SSU shot 34.8 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from the charity strip. The Lady Aggies improved from 38.7 percent in the first period to 70.0 percent in the second half from the floor, ending the game on a 51.0 percent clip.
The Lady Tigers fall to 7-17 overall and 2-9 in the MEAC, while the Lady Aggies improve to 17-8 and 9-3 in conference play.
Savannah State returns to action against Florida A&M in Tallahassee, Florida on February 23. The Lady Tigers play four games on the road before returning to Tiger Arena on March 7 against Maryland Eastern Shore in the final game of the regular season.
