SAVANNAH, Ga. – North Carolina Central broke a 29 game losing streak with a 43-38 win over the Savannah State women's basketball squad, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match up Saturday in Tiger Arena.
SSU and N.C. Central traded the lead seven times, until the Lady Eagles took control with eight minutes to play. The Lady Tigers got with a one point, 32-33, of NCCU's lead at the 5:51 mark, as
Jasmine Norman finished a layup in the paint.
The Lady Eagles then pushed ahead in the next two minutes with four good free-throws to take a 39-34 lead with 3:15 to play. NCCU finished off the win by holding the Lady Tigers to four points in the final minutes.
SSU shot 32.7 percent from the floor overall, after shooting 40.9 percent in the first half. The Lady Tigers hit 3-of-6 three point attempts in the opening half, but went 0-for-4 in the second period. The Lady Eagles shot at a 30.6 percent clip from the floor, and 68.4 percent from the charity strip.
Junior
Andrietta Thomas came off the bend for the Lady Tigers to score 11 points, leading the team. Senior
Erin Hogue grabbed 12 rebounds and tacked on 6 points. NCCU's Chasidy Williams led the field with 14 points, followed by Aja Hoyle who scored 13 points.
A low scoring opening half saw the game tied up four times. With 9:07 to play,
Jazmin Thomas drained a 3-pointer to give SSU a 17-14 advantage. The Lady Eagles respond with a short jump shot to cut SSU's lead to one point.
SSU again pushed ahead with a layup from A. Thomas, but NCCU responded with back-to-back points for a 20-19 lead and 5:53 to play.
After three scoreless minutes, SSU jumped back in front with a layup from
Blessing Uba at the 2:07 mark for a 21-20 lead. Several missed shots from both teams closed out the opening period as SSU held the one point lead into the locker room.
A 5-0 run early in the second period helped SSU to a 28-23 lead with 11:19 to play. NCCU responded with layups from Amber Neely, a jump shot from Montreshia Perry, and a good free throw from Tisha Dixon to tie the game up for the final time with 8:34 to play.
The Lady Tigers fall to 7-16 overall and 2-8 in the MEAC. NCCU improves to 1-23, and 1-10 in conference. SSU returns to action Monday evening against North Carolina A&T. Tipoff in Tiger Arena is set for 6 p.m.
