SAVANNAH, Ga. – The SSU women's basketball squad entered Saturday's showdown with Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rival South Carolina State on a six game losing streak. The Lady Tigers used a big second half push and some good free-throw shooting to edge out a 49-46 victory in Tiger Arena.
Senior
Erin Hogue led the Lady Tigers to victory with her 10
th double-double of the season, scoring 18 points and grabbing 18 boards.
Jasmine Norman scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds. Hogue tapped the SSU record books earlier this season, becoming the leader in single season double-doubles.
Trinese Fox led the Lady Bulldogs with 13 points, while Ashley Clarke grabbed 11 rebounds. Savannah State improves to 7-15 overall and 2-7 in the MEAC, while S.C. State falls to 13-7 and 5-3.
With 2:11 to play in the second period, Fox drained a layup to cut SSU's lead to 45-44. Fannie Goodwin drove the lane with 36 seconds to play, sinking a layup and drawing the foul. After a missed free-throw, the Lady Tigers regained possession.
On the other end, Hogue was fouled and gave the Lady Tigers a one point lead, 47-46, with two good free-throws. Norman got a steal and drew a foul with 18 seconds to play. Norman sank two from the charity strip to give SSU a 49-46 edge. A key block from
Nicole Shelton on a last second shot from Goodwin sealed up the win for Savannah State.
In the opening half, S.C. State jumped out to a quick five point lead, 7-2, in the first four minutes. Trailing 11-5 a few minutes later, SSU got an offensive spark from Hogue who finished a three point play to cut the visitors lead to 11-8.
A steal by
Charmaine Greene and a fast break layup from Norman cut the deficient to one.
Jazmin Thomas gave SSU their first lead of the game, 12-11, with a layup at the 9:18 mark.
S.C. State answered with a 10-2 run that was capped by a 3-pointer from Tiara Knotts with 55 seconds to play in the first half, for a 23-14 lead.
Shawanda Hanton sank two free-throws and
Andrietta Thomas drained a jumper in the final seconds to cut the visitors lead to 23-18 into the locker room.
The Lady Tigers shot 25 percent from the floor and 56.3 percent from the charity strip, while S.C. State managed a 27.3 percent clip from the field and went 86.4 percent from the free-throw line. S.C. State outrebounded the Lady Tigers 54-46.
Savannah State returns to action on February 16, in Tiger Arena against North Carolina Central. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. The game will be televised locally on WGSA – Channel 13.
NOTES:
With tonight's win the Lady Tigers are 6-3 against S.C. State in Tiger Arena, and 6-13 overall. They have never beaten the Lady Bulldogs on the road. SSU fell, 54-75, to S.C. State a few weeks ago in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
The Lady Tigers are now 2-9 since losing junior point guard
Ezinne Kalu earlier in the season to a knee injury.
SSU has fared better at home this year, with a 6-3 record in Tiger Arena, and a 0-11 record on the road. The only road game the Lady Tigers won, was in a neutral site game against Talladega College in the Southern Mississippi Thanksgiving Classic in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
