Women’s Basketball Falls To #13 South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Savannah State held with the #13 South Carolina Gamecocks early in a televised game on Saturday, but struggled to execute down the stretch, falling 40-82 in front of 4,824 in Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, South Carolina.

Senior Jasmine Kirkland emerged as the point's leader for SSU in the loss. Kirkland went 6-for-9 from the field and 7-for-8 from the charity strip for 19 points. 

South Carolina was led by Tiffany Mitchell who went 12-for-16 at the free-throw line for 18 points. Alaina Coates added 17 points.

The Lady Tigers shot 36 percent from the floor in the opening half, but dropped off to only 16.7 percent in the second half. The Gamecocks improved a 47.8 percent clip in the first half, to 54.2 percent in the second.

South Carolina opened with a 5-0 run, but SSU responded with points from Bria Dorsey and Ezinne Kalu to cut the home team's lead to 6-4 at the 17:15 mark.

Two good free-throws from Coates at the 10:57 mark lifted the Gamecocks to a 15-6 lead. SSU's Jasmine Norman then opened a 5-0 SSU run with a layup in the paint. Jerryshia Williams capped the run with a good 3-pointer.

Down the stretch, South Carolina opened an 8-0 run for a 32-16 lead with 3:37 to play in the first half. Kenyata Hendrix stopped the run with a good 3-pointer at the 3:11 mark.

In the final minutes, South Carolina burned the Lady Tigers at the free-throw line going up 43-25 into the locker room. The Gamecocks went 20-for-27 from the charity strip in the opening half.

South Carolina opened the second half with a 22-2 run, extended their lead to 38 points, 65-27 with 12:47 to play. The Lady Tigers were unable to contain the Gamecocks down the stretch, managing only 15 points to the home team's 39 in the second half.

The Lady Tigers concluded a season long 10-game road stretch with Saturday's match. They return home on Sunday, December 29 to face Troy at 7 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
