Women’s Basketball Falls To Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In a fierce battle to the end, Alabama State squeezed out a 57-52 win over Savannah State in the final 30 seconds of a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) showdown in Montgomery, Alabama on Sunday.

The Lady Hornets took a three point lead, 52-49, with 1:12 to play in the contest behind two free-throws from Quentori Alford.

SSU senior Ezinne Kalu tied the game up at 52 with a 3-pointer at the 37 second mark. ASU's Danielle Ewert responded with a layup in the paint on the ensuing possession to lift the home team to a 54-52 advantage.

A costly SSU foul sent Danielle Gazaway to the charity strip with 12 seconds to play. Gazaway sank both free-throws, giving ASU a 56-52 lead. Quentori sank a free-throw with 3 seconds left for the final score.

Kalu led the Lady Tigers with 12 points and seven rebounds. Freshmen Tiyonda Davis and Kenyata Hendrix each scored 10 points. Davis led SSU in rebounds with nine.

Quentori led Alabama State with 13 points and 16 rebounds. Taila Arrington tacked on 10 points.

Each team scored 22 points in the paint, and shot under 33 percent from the floor. SSU went 4-for-8 from beyond the arch, while ASU hit only 3-of-19 3-point offerings. The lead changed nine times in the second half.

In the opening six minutes of the game, SSU took a 9-4 lead behind a 3-pointer from Hendrix. Three minutes later, Jasmine Kirkland lifted SSU to their largest lead of the game, 15-4, with two good free-throws.

At the 5:37 mark, Kalu was fouled from outside the arch and hit three consecutive free-throws, for a 24-13 Lady Tiger lead.

In the final two minutes of the opening half, Alabama State answered SSU's commanding lead with a 6-0 run. Four of the run's points came off good free-throws. Ashunte Smith sank a layup with 7 seconds to play to get the home team within three points of SSU's lead. At the half, SSU held a 26-23 lead.

Seconds into the second half, ASU tied the game behind a 3-pointer from Arrington. The game would be tied up seven more times.

Savannah State concludes a 10-game, season-high road stretch with a visit to Southeastern Conference (SEC) opponent South Carolina on December 28. The game is set to be televised on Fox Sports South.

SSU returns home on December 29 to face the Troy Lady Trojans in Tiger Arena. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
