Davis Leads Women’s Basketball In Loss To Seton Hall

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – Savannah State freshman Tiyonda Davis scored a season-high 12 points on Friday, and came close to her first double-double with nine rebounds, in a 42-51 loss to Seton Hall University in the second game of the Seton Hall Thanksgiving Classic in South Orange, New Jersey.

The Lady Tigers will conclude the Classic on Saturday with a 12 p.m. game against Liberty University. It will be the first meeting of the two programs.

SSU senior Ezinne Kalu also came close to a double-double in the Lady Tigers fourth loss of the season, scoring nine points and grabbing eight rebounds. Jasmine Norman and Jerryshia Williams each added six points.

Tabatha Richardson-Smith led the field with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Ka-Deidre Simmons added 10 points in the Pirates fifth win this season.

After a back-and-forth to open the game, Seton Hall pushed out to a six point lead, 12-6, at the 9:46 mark, behind an 8-2 run, capped by two free-throws from Richardson-Smith.  The Pirates shot 74.3 percent from the charity strip, while SSU managed only a 25 percent clip for the game.

With 4:42 to play in the opening half, SSU's Bria Dorsey sank a free-throw to cut the Pirates' lead to a single point, 18-17. Seton Hall fired back down the stretch going up 28-20 at the half with a 7-0 run in the final two minutes.

In the opening minutes of the second half, the Pirates jumped out to a 10-point lead behind two good free-throws from Richardson-Smith, who was perfect on free offerings for the night, hitting 8-of-8 attempts.

With 12:07 to play, Simmons lifted the home team to their largest lead of the night, a 42-28 advantage, with two good free-throws.

The Lady Tigers responded with a 7-1 run in the subsequent six minutes, sparked by a 3-pointer from Kalu and capped with a layup from Davis.

Seton Hall extended their lead in the waning minutes of the contest. Janee Johnson sank a layup with 1:43 to play, lifting the Pirates to a 51-38 advantage. Kalu scored the final points of the game with a good jump shot at the 51 seconds mark.

The Lady Tigers shot 28.3 percent from the floor, while Seton Hall shot a dismal 18.6 percent. SSU falls to 3-4 overall this season, while Seton Hall improves to 5-1.

After seven games, SSU is led by Kalu, who is averaging 13.0 points per game, while Davis leads the team in rebounds with 49, averaging 7.0 per contest.
