Women’s Basketball Edges By UTSA, 51-50, In Free-Throw Bout

WACO, Tex. – The Savannah State women's basketball program garnered a huge win Friday night, in their second game of the Athletics In Action Classic. The Lady Tigers beat the University of Texas San Antonio 51-50, behind a 15-point game from junior Jasmine Norman.

The Alexandria, Virginia native went 5-for-10 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the charity strip, while also racking up five rebounds in the win. Senior Ezinne Kalu had 11 points and six rebounds, while freshman Kenyata Hendrix added seven points.

It was the second victory over a Conference USA team under the tutelage of 11th year head coach Cedric Baker. The last C-USA win for the program was against East Carolina in the 2004-05 season. SSU beat the Pirates 62-56.

Teams combined for 47 free-throw attempts. SSU shot 65.6 percent (19-29) from the charity line, while UTSA went 55.6 percent (10-for-18).

The Roadrunners opened Friday's game with a 5-0 run in the first three minutes. SSU responded with a 5-0 run of their own, sparked by a jump shot from Norman.

UTSA again pushed out to a lead, taking advantage of some costly SSU fouls. UTSA hit five straight free-throws for a 10-6 lead with 10:50 to play.

SSU responded, tying the game a minute later behind a jump shot from Norman and a layup from newcomer Tiyonda Davis, knotting the score at 10.

Down the stretch of the opening half, SSU jumped out to a seven point lead with an 8-1 run. Kalu sank back-to-back layups in the run that lifted the Lady Tigers to an 18-11 lead with 2:13 till the half.

SSU newcomer Rhianna Warren drained a jumper with under a minute to play for a 20-13 SSU lead, but the Roadrunners Haylee Beard answered with a 3-pointer, seconds later, to cut the Lady Tigers lead to 20-16 into the locker room.

SSU opened the second half with an 11-4 run, taking a 31-20 lead five minutes into the half. Teams traded points for the subsequent four minutes. Jazmin Thomas lifted SSU back to an 11 point lead, 37-26 with 11:30 to play.

The Roadrunners turned up the defense, opening a 6-0 run to cut SSU's lead to five points with 9 minutes to play. UTSA edged closer to the Lady Tigers lead in the waning minutes.

With 2:26 to play, Kamra King sank two free-throws to tie the game for the fourth time. Later, King again made SSU pay at the charity strip, tying the game for a fifth time, at 47 each with 1:39 to play.

Kalu and company responded in kind, as her and newcomer Bria Dorsey gave SSU a three point lead, 50-47, on free-throws with under a minute to play.

Norman sank a free-throw with 15 seconds to play to give SSU a 51-48 advantage. Two seconds later, Miki Turner sank two from the free-throw line to get UTSA within one point.

Hendrix missed two free-throws with 10 seconds on the clock, and with one second, King missed a game-winning 3-pointer to give SSU the win.

Tesha Smith led the field with 16 points and 11 rebounds for UTSA, while King added 11 points. SSU shot at a 36.4 percent clip from the floor, while UTSA shot 27.5 percent. UTSA outrebounded the Lady Tigers 41-40.

SSU concludes the Athletics In Action Classic on Saturday with the program's first ever look at Northwestern State. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. (CST).
