Women’s Basketball Falls To Baylor

WACO, Tex. – The Savannah State women's basketball program opened the 2013 Athletics In Action Classic on Thursday with a 31-99 loss to host school Baylor University in Waco, Texas at the Ferrell Center.

SSU newcomer Bria Dorsey led the Lady Tigers with seven points and eight rebounds. Jasmine Kirkland also came close to a double-double with six points and seven rebounds.

The Lady Bears had four ladies in double digits. Leading the troupe was senior Odyssey Sims with 22 points. Sune Agbuke registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Kristina Higgins also recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Baylor opened the contest with a 10-1 run before Kenyata Hendrix sparked some offense for the Lady Tigers with a good layup at the 15:47 mark. SSU put up five points in the next minute.

Later, Baylor took a 25-7 lead with 11:02 on the clock. SSU's defense picked up in the following five minutes as the Lady Tigers opened a 6-0 run on the Lady Bears, capped by good jump shot from Kirkland.

The run cut Baylor's lead to 12 points, 25-13, but the Lady Bears ended the scoring drought with a layup from Nina Davis. Dorsey responded by hitting two free-throws to again cut the home team's lead to 12 points, 27-15.

In the final five minutes of the opening half, Baylor asserted some dominance with a 15-2 run, including five points from the charity strip. Into the locker room, Baylor maintained a 44-17 lead.

Baylor shot at a 40 percent clip in the opening half, while the Lady Tigers managed 21.1 percent from the floor.

The Lady Bears opened the second period with a 12-2 run, ended by a good free-throw from Hendrix. A couple minutes later, the home team took a 40 point lead, 60-20, on a jump shot from Imani Wright.

Down the stretch, SSU was unable to get any offensive movement as Baylor never let the spread dip below 40 points. Mariah Chandler drained two good free-throws for the final score. Baylor outscored SSU 55-14 in the second period.

The Lady Tigers play their second game of the tournament on Friday against The University of Texas at San Antonio. It will be the first matchup between the two teams in school history. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. (CST)/6 p.m. (EST).
