Tigers Beat Florida National 87-60

Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Savannah State men's basketball team evened their record to 2-2 with a 87-60 win over Florida National in Tiger Arena.
 
Jyles Smith, who was one of four SSU players in double figures, led the rout with a career-high 16 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocks.
 
Florida National is a first-year program that competes in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.
 
The crowd of 1,110 saw a first half that featured nine ties and four lead changes.
 
The contest went back and forth for most of the first period. The Conquistadors led 24-20 with 8:51 on he clock but SSU finished the half with a 24-7 run to take a 44-31 advantage into the break.
 
Savannah State scored the first six points of the second half and expanded their lead to 60-34 with 14:23 remaining after a 3-pointer by Stephen Wilson.
 
FNU (5-5) whittled their deficit to 74-56 with just over three minutes left but Alante Fenner scored nine points during a 13-2 run that gave the Tigers their largest lead of the game at 87-58 with 14 seconds on the clock.
 
Joshua Montgomery and Devan Williams added 12 points apiece for SSU while freshman Jeremiah Hill contributed 11 points.
 
As a team, Savannah State shot 51.7 percent from the floor in the second half and 48.3 percent for the game.
 
The Tigers also controlled the boards, holding a 41 to 31 rebounding edge.
 
Both squads shot well beyond the arch. The Conquistadors made 7 of 15 of the 3-point attempts while SSU made 10 of 23. Williams made four 3-pointers for the Tigers.
 
SSU hit 19 of 25 from the free throw line. Montgomery made 6 of his 7 attempts while Smith converted 6 of 8 attempts.
 
 Julian Johnson had a game-high 21 points for Florida National.
