Box Score MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa.- Robert Morris broke open a close game in the second period and went on to defeat Savannah State 86-66 in a contest played at the Sewall Center.
The Colonials led 56-50 but used a 10-4 spurt to go ahead by a dozen points with 7:38 remaining.
A 3-pointer by
Joshua Montgomery pulled SSU within 68-59 with just over six minutes left but Robert Morris responded with a 18-5 run to grab a 86-64 edge, their largest lead of the game, with less than 30 seconds on the clock.
The crowd of 1,124 saw a first half that featured five ties.
SSU was down by one but scored five straight points to go ahead 24-20 at the 6:47 mark.
The Colonials responded to take a 33-27 lead with 2:13 on the clock but two free throws by
Saadiq Muhammad and a layup by
Terel Hall cut SSU's deficit to 33-31 with 1:27 left.
RMU led 34-31 at the half.
Robert Morris led by as many as eight early in the second period before the Tigers rallied to trim their deficit to 47-45 with 13:56 remaining after a pair of free throws by
Keierre Richards.
Montgomery paced the Tigers (0-2) with 14 points and seven rebounds. Richards added 12 points while Alante Feener chipped in 10 points.
RMU won the rebounding battle 46 to 36.
Savannah State shot 37.3 percent from the floor while the Colonials shot 41.8 percent and made 11 of 21 of their 3-point shots.
Karvel Anderson scored 21 points, including 18 in the second half for Robert Morris (1-0).
