DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- Savannah State held Bethune-Cookman to six points in the second half but it would not be enough as the Wildcats defeated SSU 48-21 before a crowd of 4,693 at Municipal Stadium.
It was the fifth consecutive loss by the Tigers (1-7, 0-4).
Cookman scored on their first four possessions as they jumped out to a 28-0 lead.
Quentin Williams threw a touchdown pass to Isadore Jackson early in the first quarter to open up the scoring while Cary White added touchdown runs of 1and 24 yards to give B-CU a 21-0 advantage at the end of the opening quarter. White score on a 12 yard run early in the second quarter to expand their lead to 28-0.
It took SSU just two plays to score on their next drive as
Leon Prunty threw a 76 yard touchdown pass to
Simon Heyward.
Preston McCarthy added the extra point and the Tigers trailed 28-7 with 10:13 left in the quarter.
Jackson scored on a two-yard run with 6:23 left in the half and added another two-yard run with 54 seconds remaining to send Cookman into the half with a commanding 42-7 lead.
Savannah State's offense came out cold in the third quarter but the Tiger defense stopped Bethune on their four possessions with
Justin Dixon recovering a fumble, and a interception by
John Wilson. The SSU defense also forced the Wildcats to punt and stopped B-CU at the SSU 26 as a fourth down pass fell incomplete.
After a scoreless third quarter, SSU struck first in the second half as they capped a 7-play, 74-yard drive with
Antonio Bostick throwing a 3-yard touchdown pass to Edward Lackey. The score was set-up by a 59-yard reception by
Jeremy Moore.
Cookman (6-1, 3-0) answered SSU's score with a 27-yard touchdown run by Michael Jones with 11:40 left in the game. The extra point was blocked by SSU's
William Broadbent and B-CU led 48-14.
SSU put together a 14-play, 85-yard drive on their next possession that ended up with Bostick tossing a 15 yard touchdown pass to
Jake Durham, the first of his career, with 7:03 on the clock.
The Tigers converted a pair of fourth down plays on the drive.
Alex Simmons rushed for three yards on a fourth and two and Bostick ran for 19 yards on a fourth and 16.
SSU ended the day with 404 offensive yards while the Wildcats had 465 yards.
Bostick passed for 202 yards along wih two touchdowns and two interceptions while Prunty threw for 108 yards and a score.
Lereginald Veals ran for 59 yards while Heyward caught three passes for 113 yards and a touchdown.
Justin Dixon led the defense with a game-high 11 tackles followed by
Marquis Smith and
Alfred Ansley who had 10 tackles each.
White rushed for 69 yards and three scores for Cookman while Williams passed for 143 yards and a touchdown. Jackson had three touchdowns with two rushing and one receiving. Branden Bryant and two of the four sacks for the Wildcats.
