FULL RESULTS
PRATTVILLE, Ala. – The Savannah State men's and women's golf teams opened the fall season this weekend with the annual Alabama State University Golf Classic, held on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Capitol Hill in Prattville, Alabama.
The men's team finished fourth overall with a two-day team score of 610 (300, 310). The team was led by returner
Ryan Lassiter who shot a 149 (74, 75), tied for a fifth place finish in the individual field.
Travis Roe finished the tournament in a three-way tie for seventh place with a 150, (71, 79).
SSU's
Scott Rogers tied for 13
th with a 153, (77, 76), while teammate and newcomer
William Proulx finished the Classic tied for 21
st with a two-day total of 158, (78, 80).
Mitch Johnson concluded the tournament tied for 29th, (160).
The Savannah State women's team finished in sixth with an 800 (401, 399).
Michelle Gifford led the Lady Tigers with a 14
th place tie after two days. Gifford shot a 183 (97, 86). Jocelyan Williams finished tied for 21
st with a 196 (95, 101).
Ebony Day and
Courtney Newton finished 26
th and 27
th , respectively. Teammate
Bianca Anderson rounded out the group for Savannah State, finishing 29
th.
The 2012 ASU Fall Classic featured eight Division I Universities in the men's tournament, and five D I schools competing on the women's side.
Alabama State won the overall tournament for the men with a team score of 584 (295, 289), and for the women with a two-day total of 648 (326, 322).
In the men's individual race, Branson Ferrier of Alabama State medaled with a two-day total of 141 (68, 73). For the women's individual, Alabama State's Jenelle Kraakman led the field with a 157 (79, 78).
The SSU men's golf team returns six lettermen from last year, including four members of the 2011-12 squad that placed third in the Annual PGA Minority Golf Championship. The Tigers lost standout
Cedomir Ilic, who medaled in the PGA Minority Golf Championship last year.
This year's team hopes to continue on the success of last year. In the 2011 VSU Trojan Fall Classic, the men's team captured the title with a two-day score of 590. The Tigers continued the fall season with two top five finishes in four tournaments.
In the spring of 2012 the men's team won the Alabama A&M Golf Classic, beating the University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff with a two-day score of 580.
In the annual Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Golf Showcase, held in Savannah, the team finished second with a three-round total score of 908.
The SSU women's golf team returns five lettermen and adds two newcomers. The Lady Tigers look to build on an historic 2011-12 season.
For the first time in school history, Savannah State qualified members of the women's golf team for the PGA Minority Golf Championship. Gifford, a Warner Robins, Georgia native, finished the tournament in sixth place with a 281 (98-90-93).
The Tigers continue the fall schedule with the Black Hall of Fame Classic in Atlanta, Georgia September 28-30.
