SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State women's tennis team will compete in the 12
th annual HBCU National Tennis Championship in Atlanta, Georgia on September 27-30. The tournament is being hosted by last year's defending champions, Florida A&M.
The championship will be formatted into three flights of singles and two flights of doubles. There will be first round consolations for singles only. Doubles will be played in an eight game pro-set.
Savannah State returns four lettermen to this year's team and will add two newcomers. Returning for her junior year, playing in the number one spot, will be Kopavogur, Iceland native
Sandra Kristjansdottir.
In the No. 2 spot, Esmira Gheisery returns to her 2011 position. The Almaty, Kazakhstan native transferred to SSU last year from Eastern Kentucky University.
Taking over the number three position will be transfer student
Andrea Pavlovic. The Belgrade, Serbia native comes to SSU from St. Bonaventure University. In her sophomore year at St. Bonaventure, Pavlovic recorded 14 victories at the No. 6 singles position.
Nicole Ashiedu will play in the No. 4 spot in her sophomore year. The Lady Tigers only senior,
Davita Washington will be playing in the five spot this year.
Freshman and Macon, Georgia native
Tiffany Williams will be playing in the No. 6 position.
The Lady Tigers were 3-13 overall last year and 0-6 in their first year in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
The fall games will not count towards the Lady Tigers regular season statistics. They open the 2013 campaign on February 1 in the new Tiger Tennis Courts on the Savannah State campus, against Albany State.
