ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Savannah State softball team claimed the regular season Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division Title Sunday by defeating South Carolina State 5-1 in the final game of the regular season.
Savannah State ends the regular season with a 24-22 record and a 12-3 conference record. They enter the MEAC Softball Championship as the number one seed in the Southern Division. It's the first .500 season for Savannah State softball in the program's history.
The Lady Tigers open post-season play against the number four seed of the MEAC North Division in the first game of the Championship on Thursday, May 10 at 10 a.m. in Ormond Beach, Florida at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
In her last regular season outing, senior
Tiffany Davies (7-9) garnered the pitching win for the Lady Tigers after four innings of work. She allowed 1 earned run on 3 hits with 1 strikeout and 1 walk.
Junior
Madison Hedderly came in relief, picking up her second save of the season after 3 innings in the circle. She allowed no runs on 1 hit with four strikeouts and no walks.
In the top of the second, Savannah State opened the scoring behind a single from
India Morgan that scored
Destiny Webster who reached on a single.
South Carolina State tied the game in the bottom half of the same inning. Qiana Arnold singled to left, platting Mikala Johnson who walked.
The game remained tied through the third inning. In the fourth, Davies broke the tie, scoring
Jessica Weimerskirk on a double after Weimerskirk tripled to the right field fence.
Savannah State added two more runs in the fifth.
Amber Hallman was platted on fielding error that saw
Chelsea Parrish reach. Later, Weimerskirk singled to score Parrish for a 4-1 Savannah State lead.
Hedderly singled in the top of the seventh, scoring Hallman who reached on a single for the final run of the game. The Lady Tigers racked up 10 hits in the win. Hallman, Hedderly, and Weimerskirk led the team with two hits apiece.
In the three game series sweep, Hedderly and Davies combined for a 0.67 ERA, and the team batted a .333 average with 31 hits.
