ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Savannah State junior
Madison Hedderly went yard in the seventh inning of a tied game, leading the Lady Tigers to a 6-4 win over the North Division one seed Delaware State University in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Softball Championship in Ormond Beach, Florida, Thursday.
The win helped the Lady Tigers, the one seed in the South Division avoid leaving the tournament earlier after falling to the North Division fourth seed Hampton University in the opening game of the day.
Savannah State continues in the tournament, playing North Carolina A&T Friday morning at 10 a.m. in the loser's bracket. The Lady Tigers need three wins to get into the Championship Saturday at 1 p.m.
After two scoreless innings, the Lady Hornets dented the scoreboard in the bottom of the third behind a fielding error that scored Bria Green who reached on a double.
The Lady Tigers answered in the fourth.
Tiffany Davies blasted a 2-run single up the middle, scoring
Chelsea Parrish and MEAC Rookie of the Year
Amber Hallman who reached on a walk and a single, respectively.
India Morgan added two more runs on a 2-run double, scoring
Jessica Weimerskirk who singled and Davies for a 4-1 Savannah State lead.
In the bottom of the sixth the Lady Hornets made it a ball game behind a 3-hit, 3-run inning. Breanne Parr scored on a single from Chelsea Stern, who later scored on a fielding error. Taylor Pattillo added the tying run after being platted by Skye Boris on a double down the left field line.
In the top of the seventh, Hallman reached on a single up the middle. Hedderly brought her home on a 2-run homer over the left field fence. Delaware State threatened in the bottom of the seventh putting a runner on, but a fly out from Parr ended the game.
Hedderly was tagged with her 17th win of the season after seven innings of work. The MEAC All-Conference pitcher allowed four runs (one earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Stephanie Sarris was tagged with the pitching loss after 3.1 innings of work. She allowed two earned runs on six hits with no strikeouts and one walk.
Savannah State racked up 11 hits in the win, with Hallman leading the team at the plate, going 4-for-4. Morgan was 2-for-4 with a triple.
