ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – In game one of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Softball Championship, Savannah State the number one seed in the South Division, was upset in an extra inning 5-4 loss to the North Division four seed Hampton University.
The Lady Tigers face off with Delaware State in the losers bracket at 4:30 p.m. this afternoon. The Lady Hornets, the number one seed in the North Division were upset by North Carolina A&T, 3-1 in game two.
In the top of the seventh inning, Hampton's Shine Huwe homered of the left-center wall to give the Lady Pirates a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the inning.
Savannah State answered with two runs as
Destiny Webster was scored on a fielding error that saw
Shamyra Adams reach.
India Morgan tied the game up after scoring on a wild pitch. Morgan was walked earlier.
Into extra innings, Hampton's Carla Trimble scored Rebecca Magett on a single up the middle after Magett reached on fielding error. The run would prove to be the game winner as the Lady Tigers failed to produce any hits in the bottom of the eighth.
Hampton opened the scoring in the second inning and added another run in the third for a 2-0 lead after three complete innings. The Lady Pirates took a 3-0 lead in the fifth.
Savannah State answered the runs in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman
Katherine Stewart singled up the middle, scoring
Madison Hedderly and
Ariona Hagood to cut the Lady Pirates lead down to one run (3-2).
Jailynn Jackson garnered the pitching win after 2 innings of relief work. She allowed two runs (no earned) on two hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Hedderly was tagged with the loss after eight innings in the circle. She allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits with six strikeouts and no walks.
