RALEIGH, N.C. – The Savannah State softball team ended a tied ball game behind a 5-run 10
th inning, downing North Carolina Central 7-3 for their third Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win in Raleigh, North Carolina Friday afternoon.
The Lady Tigers improve to 14-19 overall and 3-1 in the MEAC. North Carolina Central falls to 3-34 and 0-5 in the conference.
Tied at 2 runs apiece, the game went scoreless through the eighth and ninth innings. Savannah State freshman
Katherine Stewart broke the tie with a 3-run home run, scoring
Chelsea Parrish who reached on a single and
Madison Hedderly who was placed on second base at the beginning of the inning.
Megan Uhrman added the final 2 runs on a single to center that scored
India Morgan and
Jessica Weimerskirk who both reached on singles. The Lady Tigers out hit the Lady Eagles 15-5 in the contest. North Carolina Central added 1 run in the final inning.
Hedderly picked up her 11
th pitching win after a full 10 innings in the circle. She allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits with 12 strikeouts and 3 walks. She is 11-9 overall for the season with a 2.71 ERA. Hedderly is ranked 4th in the MEAC in pitching as of April 1.
Aurora Baker was tagged with the loss after 8 innings of work. She allowed 2 earned runs on 10 hits with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks.
After the first two innings went scoreless, North Carolina Central added 1 run in the bottom of the third on a single from Andrea Searls that scored Regina Diaz who reached on a single. The Lady Tigers answered in the top of the fourth tying up the game at 1 on a single from Weimerskirk that scored Adams Shamyra.
The Lady Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the sixth. The Lady Tigers knotted the game up at 2 in the top of the seventh on a single from
Amber Hallman, who leads the team in hits with 31, that scored
Destiny Webster forcing the extra innings.
Uhrman led the Lady Tigers at the plate, going 4-for-6 with 2 RBI, followed by Parrish who was 3-for-5. Searls led the Lady Eagles going 3-for-5 with a double and 1 RBI.
The Lady Tigers continue the series with North Carolina Central, Saturday in Raleigh with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
