Lady Tigers Split With Presbyterian College

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State Lady Tiger softball squad split a twinbill with Presbyterian College Tuesday at Tiger Softball Field in Savannah, Georgia, in their last home game and final non-conference matchup.

In the opening game, Presbyterian jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the game, which held up as the final score. Tied up at 3 runs a piece in the second game, Savannah State freshman Amber Hallman blasted a walk-off double for a 4-3 win.

Savannah State is 20-20 overall and remains 8-1 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, while Presbyterian College is 15-27 overall and 6-9 in the Big South Conference.  

In the nightcap, the Lady Tigers went down 2-0 in the opening two innings. Presbyterian's Cat Tarvin homered in the first inning and Rachel Hopper scored on a fielding error after reaching on a single up the middle.

The quick lead was challenged by the Lady Tigers in the bottom of the second. Katherine Stewart and Chelsea Parrish both reached on errors by pitcher Leslie Hensley. Stewart was scored on a single from Shamyra Adams. Later, Parrish scored on a passed ball and Adams scored on an infield error.

The 3-2 lead for the Lady Tigers held through the middle innings as both teams struggled to plate runs. In the top of the seventh Presbyterian tied the game up at 3 on a home run from Hensley.

In the bottom of half of the final inning, Savannah State's India Morgan doubled to left center. Jessica Weimerskirk advanced Morgan on a sacrifice bunt bringing up Hallman with two outs. Hallman was 0-for-4 on the day, but ended the game on a good note, blasting a walk-off double to centerfield, scoring Morgan for the 4-3 win.

Tiffany Davies picked up her fifth pitching win after a complete 7 innings of work. She allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 3 hits with 2 walks. Hensley was tagged with the loss after 6.2 innings in the circle. She allowed 4 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits with 3 walks and 10 strikeouts.

After three scoreless innings in the opening game, Presbyterian broke the stalemate in the top of the fourth. Morgan Durham blasted a triple to left field scoring Mary Ellen Morris who walked.  Durham was scored on a single from Jill McLean for the final run of the game.

Savannah State failed to plate any runs, but were not unsuccessful from the plate, tying with Presbyterian with 7 hits apiece. Hallman led the team, going 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, followed by Morgan who was 2-for-4 with a double.

Tarvin was tagged with the pitching win after 5 innings in the circle. She allowed no runs on 7 hits with no walks and 2 strikeouts. Teammate, Kensley Loudermelk picked up her first save of the season after 2 innings of work she allowed no runs on no hits with 3 strikeouts.

Davies was tagged with her eighth loss of the season after a complete seven on the mound. She allowed 2 earned runs on 7 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.

The Lady Tigers head to Daytona, Florida this weekend for a three game series with Bethune-Cookman, who leads the MEAC South Division with an 8-0 conference record. The opening game is set for Saturday, April 28 at 1 p.m.
