Lady Tigers Sweep North Carolina A&T

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State softball team powered by North Carolina A&T at the new Tiger Softball Field this weekend; sweeping a three game series to improve their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference record to 8-1 and overall record to 19-19. The Lady Tigers are in second place in the South Division behind the 6-0 Bethune-Cookman.

On senior day, Saturday, the Lady Tigers downed the Lady Aggies 3-0 and 8-1 in a doubleheader. In Sunday's third game a pair of freshman helped Savannah State to a 2-1 extra inning win.

The Lady Tigers host their last non-conference and last home game on April 24 against Presbyterian College before heading on the road for a three game road series against MEAC South Division rivals Bethune-Cookman. Savannah State will end the regular season against South Carolina State with a three game series in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

Prior to the first game on Saturday, the Lady Tigers honored seniors Shamyra Adams, Tiffany Davies, Chelsea Parrish and Jessica Weimerskirk for their contributions to the team which continued in the opening game.

Weimerskirk ignited the scoreless Lady Tigers in the bottom of the fifth inning with a single that scored freshman Katherine Stewart who reached on a double. Freshman Amber Hallman singled to score India Morgan and Weimerskirk. Morgan reached on a double.

The 3-run fifth inning was enough as the Lady Aggies were shut down at the plate by junior pitcher and two time MEAC pitcher of the week Madison Hedderly. Hedderly recorded her fourth shutout of the season after pitching a complete 7 innings allowing 0 runs on 3 hits with 6 strikeouts.

Ashira Dobison was tagged with the pitching loss after six innings of work. She allowed 3 earned runs on 7 hits with 0 strikeouts and 3 walks.

In game two of Saturday's twinbill, Savannah State took a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Jami Paolini blasted a single to center field scoring India Morgan who reached on a bunt single. On an errant throw from outfield, Hallman crossed the plate and Paolini advanced to second. Paolini was later to platted on a single from Chelsea Parrish.

Working a no-hitter, Davies contained the Lady Aggies bat's till the 4th inning. Sabrina Edmonds reached on an error and was scored on a single from Hope Fletcher.
In the top of the fifth, Hedderly came in relief of Davies holding North Carolina A&T from scoring two more runs with two straight strikeouts to retire the side.

In the bottom half of the sixth, the Lady Tigers bats came alive as the first six batters all recorded hits and Savannah State sealed up the win with five more runs. Morgan led the team at the plate going 3-for-3 while Parrish was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and Hallman was 3-for-4 with 1 RBI.

Davies garnered the pitching win, improving her season record to 4-7. She allowed 1 unearned run on 2 hits with 2 strikeouts. Hedderly picked up her first save of the year after working three full innings in relief. She allowed 0 runs on 1 hit with 5 strikeouts.

Alexandra McAfee was tagged with the pitching loss after six innings of work. She allowed 8 runs (7 earned) on 14 hits with 2 walks and 0 strikeouts.

In Sunday's third game Hallman blasted her sixth homer of the season, a team high, for a 1-0 Lady Tigers lead in the first inning. Through the middle innings, the game remained scoreless as a pitching battle between Dobison and Hedderly ensued.

In the top of the sixth, North Carolina A&T's Dominique Smith singled to reach and was plated on an RBI sac fly to centerfield from Juanita Jernigan to tie the game up at 1.

A scoreless seventh sent the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the 9th inning, Hallman started off things with a single to right. Parrish singled through the left side and Hedderly walked to load the bases. Stewart singled up the middle scoring Hallman for the walk-off single and 2-1 Lady Tiger win.

 Hedderly picked up her 14th win of the season after 9 full innings in the circle. She allowed 1 earned run on 6 hits with 1 walk and 7 strikeouts. Dobison was tagged with the loss after 8.2 innings pitched. She allowed 2 earned runs on 8 hits with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts.
