SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State Lady Tigers split a doubleheader with Norfolk State at the new Tiger Softball Field Wednesday. Savannah State scored 3 runs in the seventh inning to take a 3-2 decision over the Lady Spartans in game one, but fell in the nightcap, 4-3 to the visitors.
Junior
Madison Hedderly pitched both games. She picked up her sixth win in the opening game after seven innings on the bump. She allowed 2 earned runs on 6 hits, with 4 strikeouts and 3 walks. Hedderly pitched a full seven in game two, allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits with 8 strikeouts.
Savannah and Norfolk were knotted up at 0 for the first four innings of game one. In the top of the fifth, the Lady Spartans broke the tie when Danielle Wright scored Morgan Boyd on a single to center, after Boyd reached on a single. Wright was brought in for the 2-0 lead on a single from Alina Moriarty.
The Lady Spartans held the lead till the seventh inning. Savannah State's Jami Paolini reached on a single. Later,
Katherine Stewart reached on a fielder's choice. Jessica Weimserskirk blasted a 3-run home run plating Paolini and Stewart for the 3-2 lead and final score.
Norfolk State's Jamie Schulle was tagged with the pitching loss after 6 ½ innings on the mound. She allowed 3 earned runs on 4 hits with 4 strikeouts and 3 walks.
In game two the Lady Spartans took a 2-0 lead in third inning. Haley Ward doubled to centerfield, scoring Boyd, who reached on an error. Ward was later scored by Gipsy Ramierez, who doubled.
In the bottom of the fourth, Savannah State cut the visitors lead to one as
Amber Hallman scored on a single from
Shamyra Adams after reaching on an infield single. Norfolk added two more runs in the top of the fifth.
The Lady Tigers answered with 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Hallman blasted her second home run of the season, scoring
India Morgan who reached on a single to right. The late rally was not enough for Savannah State as Norfolk State held them scoreless in the last two innings for the final score.
Riley was tagged with the pitching win for Norfolk State after six innings of work. She allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits with 1 strikeout and 1 walk.
