CONYERS, Ga. – The Savannah State Lady Tigers finished out their 2012 appearance in the Tiny Laster Tournament in Conyers, Georgia, Sunday with an 11-1 loss to Mississippi Valley State University, and a 10-2 win over South Carolina State University.
In their first game against Mississippi Valley, Savannah State committed four costly errors late in the game to give the Lady Devilettes the mercy rule victory. But, it was Mississippi Valley State that committed two costly errors early to give the Lady Tigers their only run.
Amber Hallman reached on an error from Mississippi Valley's shortstop and later scored on an error from the Lady Devilettes third basemen.
In the third inning, Nicole Burr sent a bomb over the fence, scoring Kishti Kamaka and Alex Robertson to give the Lady Devilettes a 3-1 lead. Mississippi Valley scored four more runs in the fourth, and added four more in the fifth to end the game early.
Mississippi Valley's Kimberly Spivey got the pitching win after 4 innings on the mound; she allowed 1 earned run on 1 hit with 2 strikeouts and 3 walks.
Cassie Standard was tagged with the pitching loss after four innings; she allowed 11 runs, 3 earned, on 10 hits with 1 strikeout and 3 walks.
In the nightcap, the Lady Tigers put up 13 hits for a 10-2 rout of South Carolina State. Morgan India,
Chelsea Parrish, and
Shamyra Adams led the team with 2 hits apiece.
Morgan led off the Lady Tigers in the opening inning with a double to centerfield.
Megan Uhrman scored Morgan on single to center.
Amber Hallman doubled, scoring Uhrman for the 2-1 lead after the first inning.
In the third, Savannah State plated four more runs, sparked by a singles from Morgan and Parrish. The Lady Tigers tacked on the final four runs in the fifth inning. In the fifth, Parrish was hit with a pitch. Jami Paolini blasted her first home run of the season, scoring Chris Keller, who was pinch-running for Parrish.
The Lady Bulldogs added a second run in the fifth as Kelsey Grochow reached on a single and was scored later by LaTavia Riley who singled.
Madison Hedderly picked up her fifth pitching win of the season for the Lady Tigers, after five innings of work she allowed 2 earned runs on 6 hits with 3 strikeouts. Raven Johnson was tagged with the loss after one inning of work. She allowed 2 earned runs on 4 hits with no strikeouts and no walks.
Savannah State heads home for a doubleheader with Norfolk State University, Wednesday, March 7
th at the new Tiger Softball Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
