Lady Tigers Drop Twinbill to Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Savannah State softball squad battled it out in two close matches after a 30 minute rain delay, but came up short, falling to the Charleston Southern Lady Buccaneers 3-2 in game one and 4-2 in game two Wednesday afternoon in Charleston, South Carolina.

In the opening game, the Lady Tigers held a 2-1 lead over the Lady Bucs in the third inning after Amber Hallman was plated on a single to right field from Madison Hedderly. The run went unanswered in the fourth as both teams failed to add any runs to the scoreboard.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Megan Lombard blasted a solo home run over the left field wall to tie the game up at 2.  In the sixth, Savannah State left the go-ahead on base and Charleston Southern took advantage in the bottom half of the side, as Melanie Stickney was walked in by Hayes Holdsworth. The single run in the sixth proved to be the game winner for the Lady Bucs.

Tiffany Davies was tagged with the pitching loss after a complete game on the mound. She allowed 3 earned runs on 8 hits with 5 walks and 2 strikeouts. Jennifer Giles garnered the pitching win after 6 innings of work. She allowed 2 earned runs on 9 hits with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk. Morgan Dowdy was tagged with a save after a single inning of work for the Lady Bucs.

In game two of the twinbill Charleston Southern racked up three late hits to seal up the 4-2 win. In the top of the fourth, the Lady Tigers took a 2-1 lead behind a double from Chelsea Parrish that scored Jami Paolini and Amber Hallman. Hallman reached on a double and Paolini reached on a bunt single.

The Lady Bucs answered with a single run in the bottom of the fourth and two more runs in the bottom of the fifth taking a 3-2 lead into the sixth inning. The Savannah State bats struggle in the last two innings as the team combined for 1 hit.

Charleston Southern added the final run in the bottom of the sixth on a double from Holdsworth that scored Stickney. Lady Bucs freshman Spencer Adkinson, in her second start of the season, was tagged with the pitching win after a full seven innings in the circle. She allowed 2 earned runs on 6 hits with 7 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Hedderly garnered the pitching loss after a complete game on the bump. She allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 9 hits with 6 strikeouts and no walks.

The Lady Tigers continue with a road trip series at Stetson University, Saturday March 24 in Deland, Florida and then open Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play on March 31 at home with a doubleheader against Florida A&M University.
