Lady Tigers Drop Final Regular Season Game

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Savannah State Lady Tigers fought to the end in their last regular season game, tying up the match with only seconds remaining, but the University of Maryland Eastern Shore landed five quick point to take the 47-42 win.

Savannah State ends the season 10-19, 3-13, while the Lady Hawks end with an 11-17, 8-8 record. The Lady Tigers will begin post-season play, Monday March 5th in the opening round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Basketball Championship Tournament.

Savannah State headed into the second half of play tied up at 17 and quickly found some momentum on an 8-0 run in the first 5 minutes, sparked by a jump shot from Blessing Uba. The Lady Tigers held their lead up through the half, going up by as much as 9 points, when Jasmine Kirkland sank a layup for a 40-31 lead.

Maryland Eastern Shore's Amber Cook nailed a 3-pointer with 4:46 to play to cut the deficient to 2 points, 40-38. Minutes later, Karona Roach tied the game at 40 with a layup for the Lady Hawks.

Down 2 points, 42-40,  with 52 seconds left to play Savannah State's Ezinne Kalu sank two free-throws to tie up the game for the ninth time.

Adobi Agbasi dropped a layup with 22 seconds and drew the foul, sinking the extra point to give the Lady Hawks a 3-point lead, at 45-42.  Agbasi was fouled again a few seconds later, and added two more points from the charity strip for the final score.

Savannah State and Maryland Eastern Shore stayed within 5 points of each other in the first half, tying the game 5 times and trading the lead only once. Jasmine Norman sank a layup with 1:22 left to give the Lady Tigers a 5-point lead. The Lady Hawks then went on a 5-0 run in the last minute to tie the game up at 17 into the locker room.

Kalu led the Lady Tigers with 14 points, while Uba added 6. Chelsea Sanders led Maryland Eastern Shore with 12 points, while Agbasi tacked on 11 and Roach added 10.
