Lady Tigers Split Four Games in Savannah State Softball Classic

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State Lady Tigers split four games Friday and Saturday March 16-17 in the Savannah State Softball Classic with visiting teams Morgan State University and Alabama State University.

On Friday, the Lady Tigers swept a doubleheader with Morgan State winning game one 3-2 and game two 3-0. Savannah State dropped both games on Saturday, falling to Morgan State in the first game, 11-9 and losing in the nightcap 3-0 to Alabama State.

During Saturday's action, Morgan State fell to Alabama State, 16-7 in the middle of three games.

In the opening game of the tournament, Savannah State trailed Morgan State 0-1 in the fourth inning, but tied the game on double from Chelsea Parrish who scored Megan Uhrman after she reached on a single. The Lady Tigers added the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth on a single from Katherine Stewart that scored Christina Keller who was pinch-running for Madison Hedderly.

In the sixth inning, Morgan State tied the game at 2 runs apiece. The seventh inning remained scoreless forcing extra innings. After Morgan State failed to score, the Lady Tigers advanced the placed runner, Jessica Weimerskirk to third on a single from Morgan. Uhrman blasted a walk-off single to left field scoring Weimerskirk and setting the final score at 3-2.

Parrish blasted a 2-run home run in the second inning of game two, scoring Jami Paolini, who reached on a single and giving the Lady Tigers a 2-0 lead. Savannah State added the third and final run in the sixth inning as Uhrman was scored on a sacrifice fly from Hedderly after reaching on a single.

Hedderly was tagged with the win in game one after a full 8 innings on the mound. She allowed 2 earned runs on 2 hits with 6 strikeouts and 1 walk. Tiffany Davies garnered the pitching win in the second game after a complete game in the circle. She allowed no runs on 5 hits with 5 strikeouts and no walks.

On Saturday, Savannah State opened the day with a game against Morgan State in which a combined five home runs were hit.  The Lady Bears were trailing 0-4 in the fourth inning but soon erased the deficient behind a 1-run home from Tiffany  Rubin and a 2-run home run from Boshia Richardson.

The Lady Bears racked up a total of 8 hits, scoring 7 runs for a 7-4 lead in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lady Tigers answered as Amber Hallman blasted her first grand slam of the season, scoring Uhrman, Morgan and Weimserskirk. Savannah State took the lead back with the base-clearing hit by one run 8-7 heading down the stretch.

Morgan State opened up the 1-run score in the sixth inning with four runs taking an 11-8 lead. Savannah State failed to answer all the runs, scoring only one in the bottom of the sixth, as Jami Paolini blasted her third home run of the season.

Cassie Standard was tagged with the pitching loss after 2 innings on the mound. She allowed 4 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits with 1 strikeout and 3 walks. Amber Bachman was tagged with the win after 7 innings on the mound she allowed 6 runs (4 earned) on 17 hits with 3 strikeouts.

In the fourth game for Savannah State and the last game of the tournament, Alabama State racked up a 3-0 lead in the first five innings for the shutout win. The Lady Hornets blasted seven hits, while the Lady Tigers had five hits.

Hedderly was tagged with her seventh loss of the season after seven innings on the mound. She allowed 3 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits with 7 strikeouts and 1 walk. Hedderly is 8-7 overall. Aman Garcia was tagged with the win after 3 innings of work. She allowed no runs on 3 hits with 1 strikeout.

The Lady Tigers head on the road to face Charleston Southern in a doubleheader in Charleston, South Carolina, Tuesday March 21st.
