Lady Tigers Lose Two in Alabama

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Savannah State softball squad fell to Kentucky State University 2-1 in the opening game Tuesday morning in Huntsville, Alabama. In the afternoon they dropped an 8-3 decision to Eastern Illinois University.

The Lady Tigers broke a scoreless game in the bottom of the third inning behind a triple from India Morgan in the opening game with Kentucky State. Megan Uhrman grounded out to second base, platting Morgan for a 1-0 Savannah State lead.

In the fifth inning the Lady Thorobred's Jordan Foyer reached on a single and was advanced to second on a sacrifice fly from Brittney Flores. Rikki Martinez scored Foyer on double tying the game at 1 run apiece. Shenaaz Burrell singled to center, scoring Martinez for the go ahead run. The game remained scoreless in the last two innings, giving Kentucky State the 2-1 win. Savannah State out hit the Lady Thorobred's 9-7.

Cassie Standard was tagged with the pitching loss after 5 innings of work. She allowed 2 earned runs on 7 hits with 1 strikeout and 2 walks. Lorena Villamar garnered the pitching win after a complete game in the circle. She allowed 1 earned run on 9 hits with 1 strikeout and no walks.

In the top of the third inning of the Lady Tigers second game of the day, the Lady Panthers of Eastern Illinois put up 3 runs behind a triple from Melise Brown that scored Bailey O'Dell and Jen Sauicer. Brown was later platted on a single from Reynae Hutchinson.

Savannah State answered with a single run as Amber Hallman blasted her third home run of the season in the bottom of the third inning. In the fourth, Shamrya Adams reached on a single, and later scored on an error.

The Lady Tigers evened up the score in the fifth inning. Jessica Weimserskirk singled and was platted on a single from Uhrman, knotting the game up at 3 runs apiece. 

Eastern Illinois added four runs in the fifth inning for the runaway victory, and added a single run in the seventh inning for the final score. Hanna Mennenga was tagged with the pitching win after 2.1 innings on the mounds. She allowed no runs on 0 hits with 3 strikeouts and 3 walks. Madison Hedderly was tagged with the loss after a complete game in the circle. She allowed 8 runs (5 earned) on 8 hits with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks.

The Lady Tigers are 9-12 overall.  They will host the Savannah State Softball Classic against Alabama State University and Morgan State University beginning Friday afternoon with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Morgan State.
