Savannah State Sweeps Doubleheader With Maryland Eastern Shore

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Savannah State Lady Tigers swept a doubleheader against the Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks Saturday at Hawks Field in Princess Anne, Maryland.

The Lady Tigers racked up 11 hits for the 10-1 victory in the opening game and blasted 12 hits to shutout the Lady Hawks in the nightcap, 8-0. Savannah State improves to 9-10 overall.

In the opening game, Madison Hedderly picked up her seventh pitching win of the season after five innings on the bump. She allowed 1 earned run on 4 hits with 9 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Savannah State led game one 5-1 heading into the fifth inning. Hedderly singled, and Shamyra Adams reached on a fielder's choice, plating Christina Keller, who was pinch-running for Hedderly.

Jessica Weimerskirk reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base to advance. India Morgan flied out to centerfield, scoring Adams. Megan Uhrman singled to score Weimerskirk on the next at bat. Chelsea Parrish singled to right field, scoring Rachel Cuffy who reached on an error and Uhrman for the 10th run.

Parrish led the team at the plate, going 3-for-3 with 3 RBI. Morgan was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and 2 doubles. Kristen Lee led the Lady Hawks, going 2-for-3. Carmen Gurrola was tagged with the pitching loss after five innings of work. She allowed 10 earned runs on 11 hits with 2 strikeouts and 1 walk.

In the second game Savannah State blasted 12 hits for the 8-0 shutout win. Cassie Standard picked up her first pitching win of the season after a complete game. She allowed no runs on 2 hits with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks. Gurrola was tagged with the loss after 5 innings of work. She allowed 8 runs (7 earned) on 12 hits with 3 strikeouts and 1 walks.

The Lady Tigers have scored 25 combined runs in first innings of the current season. Game two with Maryland Eastern Shore was no exception as they racked up an early 4-0 lead in the opening stanza. Morgan singled and was later plated by Uhrman on a single. Amber Hallman singled and advanced to second on a passed ball. Jami Paolini blasted her second home run of the season scoring Uhrman and Hallman.

Morgan reached on her second at bat and was plated on a single from Hallman in the second inning. The Lady Tigers added two more runs in the third and the final eighth run in the fourth inning.

Savannah State heads to Huntsville, Alabama to face-off with Alabama A&M and Eastern Illinois on Tuesday, March 13th.
