SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State Softball squad won game one of a doubleheader with Mercer University 3-2, Tuesday, but dropped the nightcap, 9-3 at the new Tiger Softball Field in front of 100 fans.
The Lady Tigers are now 5-7 overall, as they head into the 5
th annual Tiny Laster Tournament in Conyers, Georgia March 3
rd.
In the opening game,
Madison Hedderly picked up her fourth win of the season in the circle for the Lady Tigers. Hedderly pitched a complete game, allowing 2 earned runs on 8 hits with 3 strikeouts and 6 walks. Kerri Nidiffer was tagged with the loss after 6 innings of work. She allowed 1 run, no earned on 5 hits with 3 strikeouts and 3 walks.
Savannah State opened the scoring early as lead-off hitter
Shamyra Adams walked,
Megan Uhrman was hit with a pitch and
India Morgan walked to load the bases. Adams was plated on a walk from
Chelsea Parrish. Hedderly flied out to centerfield to plate Uhrman and give the Lady Tigers a 2-0 lead.
The Lady Bears answered the runs in their next at bat. Caitlin Peisel singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Randi Rea plated Peisel on a double to left-centerfield. McKenzie Woody reached on a bunt, stole second and scored on a single from Kristin Marco to tie the game at 2.
Savannah State took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Parrish blasted a single to left field scoring Morgan who reached on an error for the one run lead and final score.
In game two, Mercer scored 6 runs in the top of the fourth to seal up the 9-3 rout of the Lady Tigers. Again, Savannah State opened the scoring in the first inning, platting two runs. The early lead was unanswered till the fourth inning.
Savannah State scored a single run in the sixth. The Lady Bears added a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Jessica Holsinger garnered the pitching win after 6.2 innings of work. She allowed 1 earned run on 3 hits with 6 strikeouts and 1 walk.
Tiffany Davies was tagged with the pitching loss. Davies pitched 4 innings, allowing 6 earned runs on 9 hits with 1 strikeout and 3 walks.
Woody led the Lady Bears at the plate, going 3-for-5. Tiffany Phillips was 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles. Sarah Santana was 2-for-3 with a homerun. Hedderly led the Lady Tigers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double.
