SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State Lady Tigers scored 50 points in the first half against North Carolina A&T Monday night at Tiger Arena, the most points they've scored in the first half of a game all season. But, the halftime lead was not enough to stop the Lady Aggies as they bounced back in the second stanza to seal up an 88-74 win.
The Lady Tigers came out shooting, as they knocked down 17 of 24 for a 70 percent shooting clip from the floor in the first half.
Zadous Pollard dropped three 3-pointers in the first half, as the team shot 66.7 percent from outside the arc in the first half.
Early in the opening 20, the Lady Aggies pushed out to a 7-2 lead as Amber Calvin sank a 3-pointer three minutes in. Savannah State's
Jasmine Kirkland sank a jumper a minute and a half later to tie the game up at 9. North Carolina A&T again took a five point lead, but Savannah State continued to battle, and took the lead with 8 minutes remaining on two good free-throws from
Ezinne Kalu.
In the last minute of play, Kirkland sank a layup and Kalu added two from the charity strip to give the Lady Tigers a 50-44 lead into the locker room.
Into the second half, the Lady Tigers continued the offensive push, going up by 8 points, 56-48, on a layup from Kalu, three minutes in. The Lady Aggies rallied; tying the game at 56 two minutes later on a good free-throw from Adriana Nazario.
With 10:51 left to play, Calvin dropped a 3-pointer to give North Carolina A&T a 2-point lead, 64-62. The trey ignited a massive 14-2 run that helped the Lady Aggies to their ninth MEAC win of the season. The Lady Tigers dropped to 10-18, 3-12, while the Lady Aggies improve to 14-14, 9-6.
Savannah State had four ladies in double digits. Kalu led with 26 points and 8 rebounds, while Kirkland added 18. Uba Blessing and Pollard each tacked on 11. Calvin led the Lady Aggies with 33 points. JaQuayla Berry ended with a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 13 boards.
North Carolina A&T's head coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs garnered her 500
th win. She has been coaching for 28 years, and has been at the helm for the Lady Aggies for the last seven years.
