SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State Lady Tigers broke a four game losing streak downing North Carolina Central 59-43 in front of 663 fans at Tiger Arena, Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Tigers took control early in the first half behind an 11-0 run that put them up by 13 points into the locker room. Savannah State held onto the momentum into the second half going up by as much as 23 points. A late rally from the Lady Eagles that cut the lead to 12 points was quelled as Savannah State held on for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win.
Jasmine Norman sank a layup, was fouled and added the extra point from the charity strip for a 3-point play that sparked an 11-0 run 10 minutes into the first half.
Norman again rushed the paint on the Lady Tigers next possession and again sank the layup, as well as drew the foul. She added the extra point for her second 3-point play in less than a minute.
North Carolina Central broke their scoring drought when Montreshia Perry sank a 3-pointer with 8 minutes remaining. Savannah State's
Zadous Pollard answered draining a trey 30 seconds later to give the Lady Tigers a 25-10 lead.
In the last four minutes of the half, the Lady Eagles cut the Lady Tigers lead behind a 4-0 run. North Carolina Central's Chasidy Williams hit a 3-pointer with 1:14 remaining to make it 32-19.
Ezinne Kalu answered with a 3-pointer of her own a minute later.
Norman sank two free-throws midway through the second half to give Savannah State their largest lead of the game, at 52-29. Despite a 9-0 run from the Lady Eagles in the waning minutes of the game, the Lady Tigers held for the 16-point win.
Kalu led the team with 19 points, while Pollard added 12, and Norman tacked on 10.
Alisha Nelson led in rebounds with 7. Williams led the Lady Eagles with 13 points and 9 rebounds.
Savannah State host North Carolina A&T Monday night in their last regular season home game. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
