Savannah, Ga. – The College of Charleston Lady Cougars took both games in a doubleheader with Savannah State University, Wednesday, February 15, at the new Tiger Softball Field.
The Lady Cougars sealed up the opening game 8-2 after scoring 7 runs in the final four innings. The visitors struggled against Savannah State pitcher
Madison Hedderly in the second
game, scoring only one run in the final inning for the 1-0 shutout.
Savannah State is 3-2 on the season, while the premiere outing for College of Charleston puts them up 2-0.
In the opening game, College of Charleston was first to score. Mackenzie Maples reached on a single to right field and was plated on a double to centerfield from Allison Pedigo.
Savannah State answered in the third inning. Lead-off hitter
Shamyra Adams reached on an infield single and scored later on an throwing error that saw
Chelsea Parrish reach, tying the game at 1.
In the fourth and fifth innings, College of Charleston scored 6 unanswered runs for the runaway victory. In the sixth the Lady Cougars added their eighth run.
Savannah State scored their last run in the bottom of the same inning. Hedderly reached on a fielder's choice as
Mariah Tutt was tagged out at second. Pinch running for Hedderly, Arion Hagood was later plated on a single from
Amber Hallman.
Tiffany Davies was tagged with the pitching loss after pitching a full seven, with 5 earned runs on 17 hits and 2 strikeouts. Stephanie Saylors got the pitching win with zero earned runs on 5 hits and 7 strikeouts.
A pitching duel left the second game scoreless for the first six innings as Hedderly did battle with College of Charleston's Hope Klicker. The Lady Cougars Chloe Fletcher scored on a single from Kristy Giragosian. Fletcher was pinch running for Pedigo who reached on a single and advanced to second on an error.
The lone run was enough for the visitors to pick up the win as Savannah State struggle to get any offense going against Klicker, who garnered the pitching win after seven innings of work. She allowed no runs on 5 hits with 8 strikeouts and no walks. Hedderly picks up her first loss of the season after seven innings. She allowed no earned runs on five hits with 10 strikeouts and 2 walks.
The Lady Tigers hit the road for the next two weeks to play in two tournaments, the Hornet Invitational in Montgomery, Ala., and the USC Upstate Tournament in Spartanburg, S.C. They will return home on February 28 to play Mercer University. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
