Lady Tigers fall to North Carolina A&T

Greensboro, N.C. – The Savannah State Lady Tigers lost 45-69 to North Carolina A&T in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action at Corbett Center in Greensboro Monday night.

Sophomore guard Ezinne Kalu sank a layup to give the Lady Tigers a 6-2 lead three minutes into the game, the largest lead for Savannah State in the game. Kalu scored all six points.  Moments later, Tiffanie Adair tied the game for the Lady Aggies hitting back-to-back free-throws.

JaQuayla Berry sank a layup with 13:40 left in the first half to give the home team the lead.  The Lady Tigers tied the game up two more times in the first half, with a short jumper from Jasmine Kirkland and a free-throw from Kalu, but were unable to regain the lead as the Lady Aggies went into the locker up 35-23.

North Carolina A&T shot at a 40 percent clip from the floor in the opening half and maintained the shooting consistence, finishing at a 40.9 percent rate for the game. The Lady Tigers struggled from the paint, shooting only 25 percent in the first half, but increased their rate in the second half at a 33 percent clip.

The Lady Aggies maintained their lead in the second stanza going up by 17 points midway through on a free-throw from Amber Calvin. Savannah State cut the deficient later in the half.  With 6:55 remaining, Kalu hit three free-throws to make it a 9-point game at 52-43, the closest the Lady Tigers came to tying in the second half.

North Carolina A&T sealed up the win behind a 17-2 run in the last five minutes of play.  Adair led the Lady Aggies with a double-double, 14-14, followed by Nikia Gorham with 12 points, and Calvin with 11.

Kalu led the Lady Tigers with 24 points and 5 rebounds, while Kirkland added 13 points. Kalu leads the Lady Tigers overall, averaging 17.7 points a game. Kirkland follows Kalu with 10.5 points a game.

Savannah State falls to 9-15 and 2-9 in the MEAC, and North Carolina A&T go up 10-14, 5-6 in the conference.
