Savannah, Ga. – The Savannah State University softball squad began its 2012 season in the brand new Tiger Softball Field this weekend, christening the stadium with three wins over visiting Howard University.
The Lady Tigers picked up two victory's in Saturday's doubleheader, with 8-0 and 11-3 wins, and then sealed up the series win with a 6-1 rout of the Lady Bison on Sunday.
Standout pitcher Megan Hedderly picked up two wins in the first and third games. She pitched a combined 12 innings allowing 1 run (zero earned) on 12 hits with 19 strikeouts.
Tiffany Davies picked up a win in the second game, pitching 6 innings, allowing 3 runs (zero earned) on 4 hits with 3 strikeouts.
In the opening game of the season, the Lady Tigers routed Howard 8-0. Shortstop
Shamyra Adams was 2-for-4 with 1 RBI, while standout catcher
Chelsea Parrish was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI. First baseman
Nicole Lowery was 1-for-2 with 2 RBI and a homerun.
Howard University jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. The Lady Tigers responded in the third inning as Adams was plated on a triple from
India Morgan. Morgan scored on a flyout to right field from Parrish, tying the game.
Savannah State scored nine more runs for an 11-3 win. Six of the runs were scored in the final inning. Morgan finished the game 2-for-4 with 1 RBI, while Parrish was 2-for-2 with 2 RBI.
In Sunday's matchup with Howard the Lady Tigers scored six runs in the first two innings on their way to a 6-1 victory. Adams led-off with a triple and was later plated on fielders choice from
Megan Uhrman. Parrish was walked and scored on a double from Hedderly, who reached home on a single from Davies, in the first stanza.
Savannah State junior
Cassie Standard finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, while Hedderly was 1-for-4 with a double.
The Lady Tigers host College of Charleston Tuesday at 1 p.m. before heading on the road for two tournaments.
