SAVANNAH, Ga. – In the final game of a three game home stretch for the Savannah State women's basketball team, the Lady Tigers downed the University of North Florida 49-40 in Tiger Arena, Monday evening.
The Lady Tigers were led by junior
Blessing Uba who went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc and 5-for-9 from the field, tallying a season high 13 points. Transfers
Andrietta Thomas and
Erin Hogue followed with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Monday's game marked only the second time this season SSU has had three players in double scoring figures.
In the 11
th meeting of the teams, SSU takes the 6-5 edge in the overall series. Jadhken Kerr led the Lady Osprey's with 14 points.
The visitors jumped out to a quick 11 point lead, 13-2, in the opening five minutes. The Lady Tigers chipped away slowly at North Florida's early advantage. Hogue cut the lead to five points on a layup with 12:15 to play in the half.
Uba dropped at long jump shot at the 6:17 mark to cut the Lady Osprey's lead to three points, 15-12. Uba has historically been strong against North Florida, scoring a career high 17 points against the Lady Osprey's in last year's 64-61 win.
With 3:06 to play, Thomas gave SSU their first lead of the game, 16-15, on a layup. Uba added two more a few seconds later for an 18-15 SSU lead. North Florida responded by cutting the home teams lead to one point on a layup form Ki Conner with 1:55 showing.
Uba dropped a trey at the 1:22 mark for SSU's largest lead till that point at 21-17.
Ezinne Kalu added two good free-throws with five seconds left to give the Lady Tigers a 23-19 advantage into the locker room.
SSU shot at a 41.7 percent clip from the floor in the first half, going 10-for-24. North Florida shot 33.3 percent.
In the second twenty, the Lady Tigers rode the late first half momentum taking an eight point lead, 33-25 with 15:20 to play. A defensive stalemate ensued with neither team scoring a point for the next five solid minutes.
Hogue broke the doldrums with a basket at the 10:17 mark to give the Lady Tigers a 35-25 lead. Uba tacked on a 3-pointer seconds later for a 38-25 SSU advantage.
Savannah State took their largest lead of the game, 18 points, with 4:34 to play as Thomas sank a 3-pointer from the top of the key, for a 46-28 score.
North Florida turned on the heat in the waning minutes, cutting SSU's lead back to 11 points behind a trey from Connner with 1:13 to play.
Kalu sank two good free-throws and Thomas added one to give the Lady Tigers a 49-35 advantage with 50 seconds on the clock. The Lady Osprey's finished the game on a 5-0 run in the last seconds of play, for the final score.
Savannah State shot 40.0 percent from the floor, and 40.0 percent from deep, while sinking 7-of-9 attempts at the charity strip. North Florida ended with a 30.8 percent clip from the floor, and 20.0 from beyond the arc.
The Lady Tigers travel to Jacksonville, Florida next weekend for a non-conference match-up with Jacksonville University. SSU returns home on December 18 for another non-conference game against Alabama State University. Tipoff in Tiger Arena is set for 7 p.m.
