SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State women's basketball team opened the 2012-13 campaign with a big win Friday night in Tiger Arena, beating Columbia College 89-55 in front of 1,001 fans.

In the opening seven minutes, the Lady Tigers jumped out to an 11-4 lead. Thomas added a layup to give SSU a 13-4 lead with 12:54 on the clock. Midway through the first half, SSU extended their lead to 18-4 on a 3-pointer from Kalu.
Moments later, the Lady Tigers took a 20 point lead, 26-6, behind a good jumper from Uba. Columbia College battled back, cutting SSU's lead to 13 points, 30-17, with 5:02 left in the first half.
Leading 13 points with 46 seconds left, the Lady Tigers took a 44-23 lead into the locker room behind several last minute points.
In the first three minutes of the second half, The Lady Tigers jumped out a 32 point lead, 55-23, behind a 9-0 run. The Fighting Koala's struggled with costly turnovers as the Lady Tigers dominated the second half, leading by as much as 37 points. Columbia College committed 37 total turnovers in the game.
With 2:01 left to play, Williams sank a layup to give the Lady Tigers an 87-50 lead.
Jasmine Kirkland dropped two good free throws for the final score.
The Lady Tigers hit the road for a five game stretch, beginning with visits to the University of South Carolina on November 15, and the University of Georgia on November 20. SSU returns home for their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game on December 1 against Norfolk State.
