Preston Blackman scored 12 of his game-high 20 points in the first half to lead Savannah State to a 61-52 win over Robert Morris in Tiger Arena.
The Tigers won by nine despite not making a field goal the final 3:20.
A jumper by
Khiry White gave SSU a commanding 43-24 advantage with eight minutes remaining but Robert Morris strung together a 18-5 run to close within six with 2:26 on the clock.
In a span of one minute the Tigers made a 6-1 mini-run to take a 54-43 lead with 1:26 left with four free throws from Blackman and two from
Arnold Louis.
RMU would get as close as seven in the closing minute but a pair of free throws by
Stephen Wilson would give Savannah State (5-3) a nine point lead with eleven seconds left.
Wilson and Louis each scored 10 points for the Tigers.
Jyles Smith had six blocks to compliment his six rebounds while
Cedric Smith had a game-high eight rebounds and seven points.
The Tigers out-rebounded RMU 43 to 32.
Robert Morris (3-4) raced out to a 6-1 lead but 10 unanswered points by SSU gave the Tigers a 11-6 edge with 9:51 remaining in the opening period.
The crowd of 988 would see RMU tie the game at 15 with 6:55 left but Savannah State would score eight straight points as they finished the half with a 8-2 run and take a 23-17 lead into intermission.
Lucky Jones led Robert Morris with 18 points and seven rebounds.
SSU shot 40.9 percent from the floor while Robert Morris shot 28.6 percent.
