Lady Tigers Top Talladega

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Savannah State women's basketball team edged by Talladega College, 58-56 in the consolation game of the 24th Annual Southern Mississippi Thanksgiving Classic Saturday in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Off the bench, newcomer Erin Hogue recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Transfer, Andrietta Thomas led the Lady Tigers with 18 points. Thomas was named to the All-Tournament team in ceremonies after the tournaments championship game, Saturday evening.

SSU's Jasmine Kirkland knotted up the game at two in the opening minute with a jumper. Thomas extended the Lady Tigers lead with a 3-pointer, giving SSU a 5-2 advantage. Thomas burned the Lady Tornados from behind the arc, hitting four of five 3-point attempts on the evening.

Talladega bounced by a couple minutes later taking a one point lead, 6-5, with 15:54 on the clock.  A trey from Thomas gave SSU the lead and sparked a 7-1 run for the Lady Tigers. Blessing Uba capped the run with back-to-back layups for a 12-7 SSU lead at the 14:59 mark in the opening half.

Trailing 14-16, Savannah native Charmaine Greene knocked down an inside jumper to knot the match up at 16 with 12:21 till the half.

Thomas added a trey for a 19-16 SSU advantage, moments later. Talladega regained the lead, going up 24-19 a couple of minutes later. With 5:16 showing, Uba dropped another jumper to give SSU a three point lead, 27-24. Uba finished the game with nine points, going 4-for-8 from the field and 1-for-1 from beyond the arc.

With only a minute till the half, Talladega held a one point lead, 32-31, but Kirkland sent the Lady Tigers to the locker room with a 33-32 lead on a good jump shot.

Savannah State shot at a 46.9 percent clip from the field in the first half, and a season best 75.0 percent (3-for-4) from outside the arc.

Out of the locker room, Savannah State extended their lead behind another 3-pointer from Thomas, giving the Lady Tigers a 35-32 lead.

With 13:03 showing, Talladega tied up the score at 44 behind two good free-throws. The Lady Tornado's extended a four point lead, 48-44, minutes later. Savannah State battled back behind a 3-pointer from Uba, and a layup from Hogue to tie the game at 48. The match was tied up seven times, and the lead changed 17 times.

With 3:37 left to play, Talladega edged a 56-54 lead behind a layup. Thomas answered with a jumper to tie the game at 56 with 2:37 showing. Hogue nailed the last two points of the game at the 2:37 mark.

The Lady Tigers escaped with the win after a missed layup from Talladega was rebounded by Hogue.

Savannah State improves to 2-3 overall, while Talladega falls to 2-4. The Lady Tigers shot 41.7 percent from the floor, 71.4 percent from beyond the arc, and 75 percent from the charity strip. They outrebounded Talladega 39-32.

The Lady Tigers return to action in the last game of a five game road stretch, Wednesday November 28, in Starkville, Mississippi against Mississippi State University. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. (CST). SSU opens Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play on December 1, against Norfolk State. Tipoff in Tiger Arena is set for 4 p.m.
