Savannah State Falls To #8 Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. – The Savannah State women's basketball team paid a visit to Athens, Georgia Tuesday night for the second game of a five game road stretch. The Lady Tigers fell 57-94 to the #8 Georgia Lady Bulldogs in Stegeman Coliseum in front of a crowd of 2,385.

In the opening minutes, Georgia took a 2-0 lead, but the Lady Tigers answered with a jumper from Andrietta Thomas to tie the game up. Two good free throws from the Lady Bulldogs gave them a lead they would not relinquish.

A 15-point run from the Lady Bulldogs extended their lead to 17-4 with 14:24 on the clock.  A minute later, layups from Ezinne Kalu and Jasmine Norman cut the home team's lead to 19-8. Kalu added a 3-pointer for a 21-11 score with 12:38 till the half.

The offensive spark was not enough to stop the Lady Bulldogs as they jumped out to a 22 point lead, 35-13, behind a 3-pointer from Tiaria Griffin.

In the waning moments of the opening half, the Lady Bulldogs went up by as much as 25 points, 49-24. SSU's Charmaine Greene sank a put-back to beat the halftime buzzer. Georgia led 49-26 into the locker room.

Georgia shot at a 50.0 percent clip from the floor in the first half, and 87.5 percent from the free-throw line. Savannah State shot 38.5 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from the charity strip.

Savannah State came out firing in the second half. Thomas hit the first jumper of the half, and Norman followed it up on the Lady Tigers next possession with a 3-pointer, cutting the Lady Bulldogs lead to 20, 51-31.

The Lady Tigers struggled against Georgia's height in the post as the Lady Bulldogs extended their lead with a 7-0 run, for a 58-31 advantage.

With 4:29 left to play, the Lady Tigers, trailing by 38 (83-45), found some offensive spark behind a trey from Kalu. Blessing Uba followed it up with two good free throws and Norman added a layup on a later possession to cut the home team's lead to 32 at 84-52. 

The Lady Tigers got within 31 points of Georgia lead, but the home team closed up the last few minutes with 7-0 run for the final score.

The Lady Tigers fall to 1-2 on the season, while Georgia improves to 5-0. Thomas led the Lady Tigers with 22 points. The Jefferson Community College transfer went 8-for-18 from the field and 4-for-4 from the charity strip.

Kalu added 10 points. She was 2-for-3 from beyond the arc and 3-for-4 from the field.  Norman was 3-for-4 from the field, adding nine points.
The Lady Tigers shot at a 39.1 percent clip from the floor, and 76.2 percent from the charity strip. Savannah State was more efficient in the second half, dropping 40 percent of attempted field goals, and 60 percent of attempted 3-pointers.

Georgia's Jasmine James led the team with 18 points, followed by Jasmine Hassell (14), and Griffin (15). The Lady Bulldogs shot 50.7 percent from the floor. Griffin was 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.

The Lady Tigers continue the road trip with a visit to Hattiesburg, Mississippi for the University of Southern Mississippi Thanksgiving Classic. Savannah State is slated to play Southern Mississippi Friday, November 23 at 4 p.m. to open the tournament. Depending on seeding, The Lady Tigers will play either Talladega College or McNeese State on Saturday to close the tournament.
