Tigers defeat Alabama St. on the road

Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Savannah State held Alabama State to two field goals the final seven minutes of the game and escaped the Dunn-Oliver Acadome with a 59-54 win over the Hornets.

It was the first road game of the season for SSU, who improved to 3-1.

A Josh Mason layup with 7:13 remaining gave ASU a 47-44 lead but the Tigers answered with back to back 3-pointers by Deven Williams to give Savannah State a 50-47 lead.

Stephawn Brown matched Williams' three with a three of his own at the 2:37 mark to knot the game at 50.

Clinging to a 52-51 lead, another 3-pointer by Williams would put SSU ahead 55-51 with 1:18 left but a layup and free throw by Joshua Love would give the Hornets hope as he made the score 55-54 with 55 seconds remaining.

ASU (0-4) would not score again as Williams finished the game with four free throws to give Savannah State the win.

Williams came off the bench to score 18 points for the Tigers. The junior college transfer from Indianapolis, Indiana made all six free throw attempts and made four 3-pointers.

Rashad Hassan led all scorers with 19 points. Jyles Smith had 11 rebounds and Preston Blackman dished out seven assists for SSU.

Alabama State used a 13-2 run early in the second period to take a 36-30 lead but SSU would rally and a layup by Arnold Louis would give the visitors a 42-41 edge with 9:54 left.

Savannah State led by as many as 13 in the first half but the Hornets rallied to put within one late in the half.

Despite shooting 29 percent from the floor in the opening half, SSU led 25-23 at the break.

SSU shot 33.3 percent for the game and out-rebounded the Hornets 40 to 30.

Alabama State shot 46.8 percent from the floor for the game and were led by Freelove's 17 points.
