Lady Tigers Earn First MEAC Win

SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Savannah State women's basketball team earned their first MEAC win with a 69-60 victory over Morgan State in Tiger Arena.
 
Ezinne Kalu and Zadous Pollard combined for 51 of SSU's points with Kalu getting 27 and Pollard adding 24.
 
Jasmine Kirkland grabbed 14 rebounds and Alisha Nelson had six blocks for SSU who snapped a four game losing streak and improved to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in the MEAC.
 
SSU used a 16-4 run to grab a 23-9 lead with 12:41 left in the first half.
 
Morgan answered with a 20-8 spurt to make the score 31-29 with 1:15 remaining but SSU finished the half with a 3-pointer and a layup from Kalu to take a 36-29 advantage into the break.
 
Pollard hit a jumper to start the second half to increase Savannah State's lead to nine but another rally by the Bears enabled them to tie the game at 44 with 13:28 on the clock.
 
The Lady Tigers reeled off a 12-0 run to build a 56-44 lead and a layup by Kalu with 6:24 on the clock gave SSU a 65-49 cushion.
 
Morgan State, who was held without a field goal the final 3:31, was able to slice their deficit to eight but could not get any closer.
 
Dekeisha Mathis led three MSU players in double figures with 13 points.
 
Morgan State is 2-11 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
