Savannah, Ga. – The Savannah State University women's basketball team extended their winning streak Thursday night, beating Talladega College 74-58 in front of 580 fans at Tiger Arena.
The Lady Tigers improve to 8-11 overall, while the Lady Tornadoes fall to 5-3.
The Lady Tigers jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first three minutes, capitalizing on several Lady Tornado turnovers. The run was short as Talladega found some momentum cutting the deficit down to 2-points, 12-10, with 12 minutes left in the first half.
Savannah State held onto the lead for the first 15 minutes, but the Lady Tornadoes bounced back tying the game at 19 on a free-throw from Megan Hoff. Talladega took their only lead of the game with 4:45 showing, on a Hoff layup to make it 22-21.
The Lady Tigers jumped back ahead on a 7-0 run in the last three minutes of the half, and headed into the locker room up 35-26.
Savannah State extended their lead in the second period behind a 57.1 shooting clip from the floor. In the last 8 minutes of the game, the Lady Tigers went on a 16-8 run that set the final score.
Ezinne Kalu led the team with 19 points, followed by
Zadous Pollard with 13. Hoff led the visitors with 15 points, followed by Lynice Schallberger with 11.
Fila Smith returned to action after missing the last two games with a concussion and led the team in rebounds with 6 and put up 8 points of her own.
