SSU's Alisha Nelson Named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week

NORFOLK, Va. -- Savannah State University women's basketball player Alisha Nelson was named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending January 15 the conferenced announced recently.

Nelson, a 6-2 Senior from Phoneix City, Arizona,  grabbed 16 rebounds, recorded nine blocks and one steal to aid the Lady Tigers to a 1-1 mark last week. Against Florida A&M, Nelson tallied 12 rebounds, and three blocks.
Nelson leads the team in rebounds averaging 7.6 a game and has 46 blocks for the season.  Nelson also holds the highest record for rebounds in a single game during the current season. She recorded 15 rebounds In the Lady Tigers game against Jacksonville University.

“I am pretty excited,” Nelson said. “We are really a defense based team. The defense keeps us in the game.  He (head coach Cedric Baker) stresses defense a lot.  Everybody has their roles and I am a good defender.  I get out there and get on every ball. In my whole four years, I've never been an offensive threat. I've had a few games here and there, but I've always been able to defend. They score the points, and I get the rebounds and we all work together.”

Nelson leads the team in number of blocks in a single game. She had six blocks against Morgan State University on January 9th.

“She's definitely made a presence on the defensive end,” Baker said. “In our scheme, she's been a blessing to have, because she's a versatile defender. She can defend up and down, on the low block and extend her game outside the paint, anywhere from 10 to 15 feet from the bucket. In that regard she's definitely been an asset. “

Savannah State University joined the MEAC in 2010 and contends in the conference for the first time this season. This is the first individual MEAC award garnered by a Savannah State women's basketball player.

“What better category to be recognized in, then the defensive end,” Baker said.  “I understand that offense will come. I know as long as we're playing sound, fundamental basketball the future will be bright for us. It's definitely an award that is regarded highly in my program. Defense has been the cornerstone of our program.  I am proud of her getting this award. She is well deserving of it.”

Hampton guard Nicole Hamilton was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Week and North Carolina A&T's Tiffanie Adair earned Rookie of the Week honors.
