Savannah State Wins Pair From UMES

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Madison Hedderly combined to strike out 10 batters as Savannah State won a double header from Maryland-Eastern Shore 5-4 and 8-4 at the Paulson Complex.

Hedderly fanned six in the first game and struck out four while pitching in relief in the second contest.

In the first game, UMES scored twice in the first inning but Savannah State answered with a run in the second as Chelesa Parrish led off with a double and came home on a sacrifice fly by Audrey Clearman.

UMES added a run in the fourth to extend their lead to 3-1 but the Lady Tigers took a 4-3 lead in the sixth with three runs as Tiffany Davies hit a two-run single.

The Hawks tied the game at four in the seventh but SSU won the game in the eighth as Megan Uhrman's fielder's choice allowed Mariah Tutt to score the game winning run.

Parrish had two hits and scored twice for SSU while Uhrman had two hits and Davies drove in two runs.

Charlise Castro had two home runs and three RBIs for UMES while Carmen Gurrola took the loss, giving up eight hits and five runs.

In the second game, SSU jumped out to a 2-0 in the first inning thanks to a two-run homer by Hedderly and Davies hit a RBI double in the second to extend their lead to 3-0.

UMES (3-22) scored twice in the third to cut their deficit to 3-2 but Savannah State added three runs in the bottom of the inning as Jessica Weimserskirk, Parrish and Uhrman all scored runs for a 6-2 lead.

UMES left the bases loaded but were only able to score one run and then added another run in the fifth to close their gap to 6-4.

The Hawks made three errors in the sixth which helped Savannah State score two runs and get the win to improve to 8-18.

Hedderly and Davies each drove in a pair of runs and Reno scored twice.

Kyrus Whitehurst had three hits and two RBIs for UMES and Amber Corrigan took the loss after giving up 8 runs and 5 walks.
