Ezinne Kalu scored a game-high 23 points but it would not be enough as Savannah State fell to Central Florida 62-48 in UCF Arena.
Kalu, who also had eight steals and seven assists, was the only SSU player to score in double figures. The Lady Tigers fall to 4-5 with the loss.
The first half was tight with five ties. SSU led by as many as four points but the Knights used a big run to turn a 20-19 lead into a 14-point advantage as they ended the first period with a 17-4 run to take a 37-23 lead into the half.
The Lady Tigers trailed by 12 early in the second period but layups from
Charmaine Greene and
Alisha Nelson pulled SSU within eight with 15:56 remaining.
SSU stayed within a eight point distance for much of the second half but a 3-pointer and a jumper by Alisha Patrick gave UCF a 56-43 lead with 2:17 on the clock.
Baskets by Kalu got SSU within 10 but the Knights ended the game with layups from Ashia Kelly and Erika Jones for the 14 point victory.
UCF improved to 4-5 with the win.
The UCF starters provided balanced scoring for the team but the Knights reserves out-scored the SSU bench players 21-3.
Patrick had 15 points and eight rebounds for UCF.
The Knights out-rebounded SSU 41 to 23.
Savannah State made 85 percent of their free throws but shot 37 percent from the field. UCF shot 48 percent from the field and made 24 turnovers.
