SSU Stumbles In Loss To Bulldogs

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Mississippi State broke open a close game with a 12-1 run to start the second half and went on to defeat the Lady Tigers 56-42 in Tiger Arena.
 
MSU's defense limited Savannah State to shot 3 for 21 from the field in the second period. The Lady Tigers were held without a field goal until a layup by Jasmine Kirkland at the 7:26 mark.
 
A layup by the Bulldogs Catina Bett gave the visitors a 50-35 lead with 5:05 on the clock and SSU could not get any closer than 10 the rest of the way.
 
Savannah State falls to 3-2 after starting the season with three straight wins while MSU improves to 5-1.
 
The Bulldogs jumped on SSU 8-2 with 16:24 left in the first half but the Lady tigers rallied with a 13-2 run to take a 15-12 lead with 9:04 remaining when Alisha Nelson made a free throw.
 
The contest was tied at 17 and again at 19 with 6:04 remaining but Mississippi State got a layup from Ashley Brown and a 3-pointer from Porsha Porter to grab a 24-20 lead with 2:10 on the clock.
 
SSU answered with Ezinne Kalu as she made a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws to pull the Lady Tigers within one with 56 seconds left.
 
Mississippi State led 26-25 at the break.
 
Kalu had 14 points for SSU while Kirkland added 12 and Uba Blessing chipped in 10. Nelson grabbed 10 rebounds for Savannah State
 
Mississippi State, who out-rebounded SSU 43 to 32, was led by Brown's 18 points and nine rebounds.
SSU shot 25 percent from the filed while the Bulldogs shot 37.3 percent.
 
Ten of SSU's 17 points in the second half came from the free throw line.
