SAVANNAH, Ga.- Uba Blessing scored 16 points while Ezzine Kalu added 13 as Savannah State defeated Columbia 68-35 in Tiger Arena before a crowd of 517.
Blessing, who scored 10 points in the first half, added six rebounds,six assists and four steals while Kalu, who scored 12 points in the second period, had four rebounbds, four assists and four steals.
SSU (3-0) had a good defensive effort as Columbia made 31 turnovers and shot 19.7 percent from the field.
The Lady Tigers jumped out to a 8-0 lead but Columbia battled battled back to cut their deficit to three with 13:47 left in the first half.
Savannah State scored 12 unanswered points to go ahead 22-9 with 2:13 left in the opening period.
SSU led 24-16 at the half.
Columbia pulled within 26-21 early in the second half but ten unanswered points gave SSU a 36-21 cushion with 14:58 remaining.
Savannah State followed that run with a 15-0 spurt to go ahead 51-23 with 8:13 on the clock.
A layup by Kalu gave SSU its biggest lead of the evening at 58-25 with 6:19 left.
Columbia (3-5) would not get closer than 30 the rest of the way.
Savannah State shot 51.4 percent in the second half and 44.8 percent for the game but was cold from the free throw line (8 for 26).
Alexandria Taylor had a game-high nine rebounds for SSU.
12 of the 13 players that played for SSU scored at least two points.
Coretta Johnson had six rebounds for Columbia while Krystle Remigio scored eight points.
