SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Savannah State football team fought until the end but came up short in a 20-10 setback from South Carolina State at Wright Stadium before a crowd of 4,069.
The Tigers trailed 17-0 before cutting their deficit to 17-10.
Derek Williams kicked a 33 yard field goal with 5:12 left before halftime and Brian Lackey caught a 27 yard touchdown pass from
Antonio Bostick with 12:03 remaining in the fourth quarter.
SSU's first score was setup when
John Wilson intercepeted a Richard Cue pass at the Bulldogs' 23 and returned it 16 yards to the SCSU seven. The Tigers got to the SCSU one yard line but were unable to get into the endzone and had to settle on Williams' field goal.
The Tigers lone touchdown came as a result of
Nate Clay forcing Cue to fumble and being recovered at the Bulldogs' 27 by
Jamani Chavis. It took SSU just one play to score when Bostick found Lackey in the endzone for the score. Williams added the extra point for SSU and the Tigers trailed 17-10.
Two drives later, South Carolina State extended their lead to 20-10 when Blake Erickson made a 45 yard field goal with 4:16 left in the game.
SSU could get no further than the Bulldogs 47 on their ensuing drive before Bostick had his pass picked off at the SCSU eight.
Justin Babb ran for 25 yards for SSU while Bostick threw for 179 yards and a touchdown but was sacked five times. Lackey had three receptions for 53 yards and a score while
Darren Hunter had eight tackles.
The Bullgogs, who had 418 yards of offense, were led by Asheton Jordan who ran for 151 yards and a touchdown. Cue ran for 96 yards and a touchdown and passed for 142 yards and dennis Rowe caught three passes for 28 yards. Donovan Richards had nine tackes for SCSU.
Erickson made a 31 yard field goal with 8:24 left in the first quarter for a 3-0 advantage and Cue scored on a 28 yard run with 5:02 remaining in the opening quarter for a 10-0 lead.
After Williams missed a 42 yard field goal attempt, SCSU marched 75 yards in 12 plays to take a 17-0 lead when Jordan scored on a 15 yard run with 9:33 left in the second quarter.
Savannah State finished the season 1-10 overall and 1-7 in the MEAC while the Bulldogs finish the regular season 7-4 and 6-2 in conference play.
It was the last game for 18 SSU seniors in a Savannah State uniform.
