Savannah State Resumes Spring Football Practice

SAVANNAH, Ga.- After taking a week off for Spring Break, Savannah State will resume spring football practice this week with practices scheduled for March 24, 26, 27 and 30. The April schedule includes practices on April 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10 before playing the annual Orange and Blue Game on Sunday, April 12 at 3 p.m. in Theodore A. Wright Stadium.

Head football Thomas Howard said that he has 82 student-athletes participating in spring drills and he is pleased with the progress they are making.

"The kids are working hard and buying into what the staff are doing. But we still have a long way to go."

Howard said that his three main goals of spring practice are to clean up discipline and detail; get a good understanding and knowledge of the offense, defense and special teams; and develop consistency among the players.

When speaking about the offense, Howard says the unit has a lot of veterans but haven't seen much time on the field. "You have a mix of guys who have been here but lack playing experience."

Howard say that the quarterback position has the most depth this spring.

"We have five quarterbacks competing to be the number one guy. We have three guys who started games for us last year and all three have consistency and now its time to develop it. Our offensive coordinator is working on that with them, starting with the fundamentals."
