PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- Savannah State broke open a close game with a 10-1 run in a 62-52 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore in the Hytche Center.
In a game that featured six ties and nine lead changes, SSU led 52-49 with 1:28 left but six straight points during a 10-1 run opened up a 12 point cushion with 46 seconds remaining.
UMES ended the scoring in the game with a pair of free throws with 23 seconds left.
SSU's
Ezinne Kalu led all scorers with 27 points. The freshman from New Jersey also had seven rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Darice Fountaine added 19 points for the Lady Tigers (10-8).
Savannah State shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half and 48.9 percent for the game.
With the score tied at eight, SSU went on a 12-0 run to grab a 20-8 advantage with 8:04 left in the opening period.
UMES (5-12) ended the half with a 20-4 run and led 28-24 at the break.
The game had three ties in the second half with the last coming at the 12:11 mark when UMES hit a free throw to knot the game at 35.
UMES led 39-35 but a 17-7 run gave Savannah State a 52-44 lead with 2:38 on the clock.
Casey Morton had 15 points for Eastern Shore.
The Hawks reserves out-scored the SSU bench players 22-3.
