SSU Softball Falls In Season Opener

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- The Savannah State softball team opened their 2010 season with a double-header loss at Alabama State at Fain Park.

ASU won the first game 9-3 and completed the sweep with a 8-0 victory in the nightcap.

In game one, The Hornets scored once in the first inning and seven times in the second for a 8-0 lead. ASU added a run in the fourth to increase their lead to 9-0.

Savannah State scored twice in the fifth off one hit and left two runners on base. Jennifer Katzman reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a single by Tiffany Taylor. Brittney Lollis struck out swinging but reached base on a error by the ASU catcher. Lollis later scored after the Alabama State right fielder made an error.

Lollis tripled in the 7th and came home after Taylor grounded out to make the score 9-3.

Taylor and Brittany Wilson had two hits each for SSU (0-2). Taylor drove in two runs and Lollis scored twice.

Cassie Standard took the loss on the mound. Standard pitched two innings and gave up eight runs, seven hits and five walks. Madison Hedderly pitched four innings in relief and struck out five batters.

B. Richardson drove in three runs for the Hornets and D. Sanchez struck out seven batters to get the win.

In game two, A W Garcia threw a no hitter for ASU. Garcia struck out seven and walked one.

Alabama State led 1-0 until the fourth and fifth innings when they scored four and three times respectively.

Hedderly took the loss and gave up 12 runs, eight hits and struck out two.

Taylor drew a walk for SSU in the second inning.

M. Frazier drove in four runs for the Hornets (2-0).
